Verizon Wireless and Motorola have now made the Motorola Droid official, revealing that the phone will offer Android 2.0 and more.

Verizon Wireless recently announced that the carrier would soon offer Android phones, and leaks have suggested that the first phone will be the Motorola Droid. Through a marketing campaign, Verizon Wireless now reveals (and confirms) a range of key features of the Motorola Droid here.

First of all, the Motorola Droid will offer a slide-out QWERTY thumbboard, similar to the recently reviewed Motorola CLIQ. However, while the Motorola CLIQ is powered by Android 1.5, the Motorola Droid will be the first phone to be powered by Android 2.0.

Some of the new features that Android 2.0 seems to bring to the Motorola Droid includes native sync support for Exchange and Facebook, a new Maps application, a new UI makeover and much more. Boy Genius Report has a nice walkthrough with screenshots of what could be a relatively fresh build of Android 2.0 here.

Verizon Wireless says that the Motorola Droid will sport a 5-megapixel camera with night shot capabilities, as well as a high-res screen that is rumored to be a 3.7-inch screen with a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. The Motorola Droid will sport a 600 MHz TI OMAP 3430 processor, which is also found in the iPhone 3GS.

According to Boy Genius Report, the Motorola Droid for Verizon Wireless will hit store shelves on October 30. The price has yet to be announced, but the carrier tends to price its new smartphones at $200 with a two-year contract and a qualifying plan nowadays – perhaps best known and first introduced as the iPhone 3GS price level after subsidies.

Should be a fine phone. I do wish though that it not have the slideout thumbboard. On screen keyboards are much better IMO. I have had both.

I think this is Verizon’s answer to an upgraded G1. There are also a lot of other phones coming out without keyboards and I think both should be in the market because it’s totally user preference. I have a G1 and a myTouch and generally prefer the onscreen keyboard when using both phones but there are some things in terminal mode that a myTouch just cannot do easily where a keyboard is much nicer.
