Get ready for new Palm WebOS toys Wednesday. Hewlett-Packard is finally taking the wraps off its long-awaited WebOS reboot since acquiring the embattled PDA pioneer, Palm, in April.

Leading up to a press event held by HP’s Palm division at 1 p.m. ET today, anticipation grows as to what devices will be unveiled and how Palm’s next-gen WebOS 2.0 mobile operating system will differ from what Apple and Google’s Android devices currently offer.

There is little doubt Palm will show a WebOS tablet. But how many? Will there be a new phone or netbook? What about services? Will we hear more about “cloud-oriented” services built into the OS as hinted by HP brass?

Need for Speed Shift Android Game

January - 26 - 2011 - Wednesday 1 COMMENT

Website: Need for Speed Shift
Price: £3

One of the big problems with the Android platform at the moment is the lack of quality 3D arcade titles. Need For Speed Shift goes someway towards addressing this issue.

It’s only designed for newer Android handsets running fast Snapdragon processors, but boy does it show off the more advanced hardware that these devices use. The 3D graphics are hugely impressive thanks to the fluid frame rate and detailed models and backgrounds.

Thankfully, the racing is top-notch too. The accelerometer steering control works well and there are onscreen buttons for braking or changing the camera angle. As with most 3D racing titles, you start with a meagre selection of cars and have to win races to gradually unlock models that are more powerful.

Verdict

Excellent 3D graphics and addictive gameplay makes Need for Speed Shift perhaps the best racing title on Android at the moment.

Motorola’s anticipated Android-based Xoom tablet has been making a lot of headlines because it’s the first to use Android 3.0 and is upgradeable to a 4G connection. But now it’s making headlines for a less favorable reason.

According to a rumor originally posted on Engadget, the retail price of the Xoom tablet will be $799.99. Ouch. That would put it on track to become the most expensive multimedia tablet on the market.

Springle Android App

January - 22 - 2011 - Saturday ADD COMMENTS

Website: Springle
Price: £1.28

Springle is not really an art package, but neither is it a game. Instead, it falls somewhere between the two. Its best thought of as a visual toy.

It creates psychedelic-style graphics similar to those you’ll find projected onto screens down your local dance club. However, Springle gives you control over the patterns that are created. If you move your finger around the screen, the graphics engine responds by adding new elements to the patterns it’s generating.

You draw by slowly dragging your finger on, but you can also tap on the display to create big explosions of colour. You can even cycle between various drawing modes by pressing your phone’s menu key.

Verdict

Springle isn’t exactly a must-have app for your phone, but it creates stunning psychedelic graphics and is fun to while away a few hours with.

A few days ago, HTC Sync was updated. While this is usually no big deal, a Phandroid tipster managed to pull a few images from the updated Sync and what he gathered was an image of the already confirmed HTC Thunderbolt, the HTC Merge (which is hopefully confirmation of its future release), and this device. No buttons, a very generic looking build, and a Verizon logo stamped at the top.

Could this possibly be a new Android device that has yet to be mentioned by either HTC or Verizon Wireless? Some are saying the lack of buttons could be a gesture area, while others think its just an Android device sans the 4 typical buttons.

What do you guys think this mysterious device might be? Leave your comments below.

Why The Big Android Bandwagon?

October - 15 - 2009 - Thursday ADD COMMENTS

We have had open source mobile platforms for years. Why has Android become a bandwagon, one big enough that people are wondering if it’s not growing too big for its britches.

One word: marketing.

Thanks to its low-cost structure, Google can subsidize the marketing of its products to a degree even experienced rivals can’t match. As I have said before there is a price lower than free, and Google is uniquely positioned to pay that price.
