Angry Birds, the insanely popular multiplatform game, is introducing a new payment system to some Android customers for purchasing in-game content.

Angry Birds players will be able to use their real cash money to pay for virtual goods existing only within the game’s ecosystem. It’s like buying a shovel for your plot on Farmville with your MasterCard.

The title? “Bad Piggy Bank.”

If you’re a fan of Angry Birds, and you know we are when we’re not feeling cynical, you’re pretty pumped up about the oncoming expansion to be released on Valentine’s Day. Very little has been known about this project, which up until this moment has been called “Pink.” What we know now, thanks to out best buddy Ina Fried, is that this Angry Birds expansion is called “Hogs and Kisses,” comes in HD for iPad (and hopefully something similar for Honeycomb,) as well as its standard Android and iPhone/iPod Touch versions, and apparently it’ll be out sooner than expected – next week soon!

We DID think it was a bit strange to release a holiday themed expansion for a game the day of the holiday – the feeling of warmth in your heart would only last one day! So this move does make a whole lotta sense. As you can see in the game, it appears to be essentially the same situation as we’ve had in previous expansion, the backgrounds of course different, and falling hearts (or floating hearts?) instead of the leaves or snow of previous holidays. There are some new bits, it seems, including wings attached to blocks, flying pigs with bows and arrows, and a few new bonus hearts (these being the same as pumpkins or presents in previous versions.) Also there’s cloud blocks, which we assume will work similar to snow blocks in their floatiness and ease in breaking. Check out the high-res gallery of screenshots below:

Springle Android App

January - 22 - 2011 - Saturday ADD COMMENTS

Website: Springle
Price: £1.28

Springle is not really an art package, but neither is it a game. Instead, it falls somewhere between the two. Its best thought of as a visual toy.

It creates psychedelic-style graphics similar to those you’ll find projected onto screens down your local dance club. However, Springle gives you control over the patterns that are created. If you move your finger around the screen, the graphics engine responds by adding new elements to the patterns it’s generating.

You draw by slowly dragging your finger on, but you can also tap on the display to create big explosions of colour. You can even cycle between various drawing modes by pressing your phone’s menu key.

Verdict

Springle isn’t exactly a must-have app for your phone, but it creates stunning psychedelic graphics and is fun to while away a few hours with.

Mobile phones are becoming very competent and popular mobile gaming platforms. According to the largest third party application store, mobile games were 25% of all apps sold for the first half of 2009. That is a 6% increase from 2008.

According to Handango’s report, Android was one of the most popular gaming platforms for mobile devices. Games in the Android catalog accounted for a larger percentage of sales than they did in other smartphone catalogs.

Android isn’t alone in being a popular gaming platform. Handango also said that RIM’s Blackberry line was popular with mobile gamers, 36% of all apps sold for the device were games. The growth of mobile gaming is no surprise to me. We always have our phones on us for the most part and games are a great way to kill some time.
