All those with Motorola devices on the new list of the abandoned phones list, at least as far as updates to Android. This list includes the Motorola Clique Xt, the Motorola i1, Motorola Flipout, and Motorola Charm. Both the Flipout and the Charm are currently (and will be forever more) at Android 2.1, while the Xt and i1 is and will now forever be on Android 1.5. Owners of these devices are more than likely going to be neither surprised nor emotionally damaged by this decision, especially since this is a basic procedure for a load of brands pushing out Android phones this day and age.

Android’s platform fragmentation is complicated enough for users, but now more confusion looms as Google segregates the smartphone and tablet OS. While Android Honeycomb 3.0 for tablets is in the pipeline, a report from Pocket-lint suggests Google will release a mid-way version of Android for smartphones that can run some Honeycomb apps on phones.

With Honeycomb, arriving first on Motorola’s 10-inch Xoom tablet, Google is splitting Android into two distinct versions: one for phones and one for tablets. However, there won’t be an Android 3.0 for phones this spring when Honeycomb tablets start arriving. Instead, reports suggest Google will launch Android 2.4, about a month after Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), to try to bridge the gap between phones and tablets.

locked up tight

It’s the question many of us are asking — will Motorola’s upcoming phones have locked bootloaders?  Based on Motorola’s previous stance on the issue we all expected the answer to be yes, but there’s no harm in asking again, right?  New hardware (the Droid Bionic and Atrix 4G use a different CPU, that doesn’t carry the e-Fuse technology) could mean a new protection scheme, and people are curious.

News about a dual-core Android smartphone (although we called it Motorola Olympus) has been circulating for some time now, many online diggers knowing that a smartphone with similar specs would be heading towards AT&T  (and Orange UK). Now official, the Motorola 4G ATRIX features a dual-core nVIDIA Tegra 2 1GHz processor (it will be the first Tegra 2 smartphone to be offered by AT&T), 1GB of RAM (many call it a beast, while Motorola goes even further and boasts that it is the world’s most powerul smartphone!), 960×530 4.0-inch qHD high-resolution display with 24-bit graphics, HSPA+ (called 4G by AT&T) capabilities, and will work on Android 2.2.

When it comes to choosing a 4G Smartphone from AT&T over (at least) the first half of 2011, users will most likely have to choose between the Motorola 4G ATRIX and the Samsung Infuse 4G. As far as our sales predictions go at this moment, we will say this: Motorola has a great reputation when it comes to updating their smartphones, while Samsung will probably see sales going down if they don’t make their actual customers happy.

Motorola and AndroidMotorola, it seems, has suffered an embarrassing bout of premature release.

Monday afternoon, the company announced on its Facebook page that the Android 2.1 update would beginning hitting Droid handsets this week. The reaction was huge: nearly 800 “likes” and pages upon pages of excitement-filled comments.

Now, however, the company says the announcement was made in error.

Where’s that damn undo button when you need it?

We’ve got the DROID in our hands… and it is sweet. Moto claims that this is the thinnest full QWERTY slider on the market, and we’re apt to believe it. The phone is incredibly slick and solid, and we’re definitely looking forward to putting it through its paces. We’ll have more photos, video, and a full review coming, so stay tuned!

This was on Android and Me:

“Apparently a hacker was able to obtain a leaked copy of a Cliq rom (which includes MotoBlur) and he ported it to the HTC G1. We saw how Google reacted to developers distributing their Android apps, so I can only imagine how Motorola feels about someone releasing their software for another manufacturer’s handset.”

Then at Moto Dev:

Anonymous person at Moto Dev event showed a moto Exec the G1 with Blur and this is what happened: looked at the screen, said “I don’t want to see that” in a nasty tone, I asked “why? is that bad?” She said yes, blew me off and walked away”

On Twitter:
@androidandme Haha just found out that Motorola doesn’t want any press at Motodev. We were escorted out.

@csewell08 @androidandme don’t worry I’m probably next, they don’t seem to like that I have blur on my g1

Button down the hatches guys! Motorola is pissed about the leak…They are looking into how it was released and who leaked it!

The speculation is over. Today Motorola announced their first Android Phone, the Motorola CLIQ, running their custom version of Android called Motorola BLUR. After spending some time with the device we have both praise and criticism – which we’ll discuss in depth below – but first we should acknowledge the bigger picture.

motorola-cliq-7Congratulations to Motorola! Speculation set extremely high expectations for this event and although the best case scenario didn’t occur (multiple Androids, Verizon included) – don’t let that detract from this event’s importance. You can critique CLIQ/BLUR all you like, and perhaps the terms “portfolio” and “suite” were misleading, but the fact remains: a Motorola Smartphone that competes with the most elite devices in the industry is a serious discussion. That in and of itself speaks to the occasion’s magnitude and the product’s potential success.

Verizon Wireless customers can start (unofficially) counting down the days that an Android Phone – and a seemingly awesome one at that – lands on their carriers shelves. A leaked Verizon roadmap has unveiled a whole swarm of Verizon Wireless goodness and amongst it all is a late October release of the upcoming Motorola Sholes.

First we see a little “evolutionary” image showing which 2009 devices are taking over the presence of currently existing models:

vzw-upcoming

See that little “Upcoming Device Opportunities” at the bottom of the image? Perhaps we should pan down a bit and see what the future holds?

vzw-upcoming-2

I spy Android! The cost is still TBD but I bet a lot of Verizon customers will be willing to spend whatever it takes to call the Sholes their own. If you’re in the group, make sure to visit our Motorola Sholes guide and our Motorola Morrison guide and sign up for the newsletters – we’ll Email you as SOON as they’re available for purchase!

Great news for Android which will (hopefully) be available on America’s largest carrier in two months and even better news for Verizon customers who are craving the Droid. What a great start to a week for Android lovers!
