RD3 – Groovebox Android App

January - 21 - 2011 - Friday 3 COMMENTS

Website: RD3 – Groovebox
Price: Free or £2.97 for full version

If you’re into dance music and fancy having a bash at creating your own tunes, RD3 Groovebox is a good place to start. It provides you with an old school drum machine in the vein of the Roland 909 that you can use to create you own beats.

Then across the top of these beats, you can add a bassline using the Roland 303 style synth that comes complete with squelchy filters that have easy to use cut off and resonance controls.

The app also includes a mixer, which turns out to be a simple sequencer that enables you to string together different baselines and drum patterns to create a full tune.

Verdict

RD3 – Groovebox is great fun to play around with and the straightforward controls mean even novices can get good results out of it quite quickly.

YouTube Mobile recently received an update that allows users to easily discover new music. Official music videos recognized by YouTube are now indicated by a music note badge. Also, a new tab shows the user related artists and more music by the artist that the user is currently listening to. Outlets such as VEVO – who released their own Android app yesterday – also have a banner displayed beneath their videos, as shown above.

To use this new version of YouTube, you’ll need Android 2.2 or higher. Gingerbread users, you should already have this version of YouTube on your device. While the advertisements on some of the videos can be frustrating, it’s even more frustrating when videos aren’t available for mobile viewing. With that being said, the increased ads also mean increased content. Plus, the whole music discovery is pretty nifty.

Let us know what you think about the new YouTube update in the comments!

Android Turns Up The Music

From the minute it was introduced, Apple’s iPhone was destined to be a mobile music powerhouse given the device’s dual-role as an iPod. Competing smartphones have struggled to make that same mobile music connection, despite having many of the same applications and capabilities.

Slacker Radio 3.0 on the Storm

Slacker Radio 3.0 (to be) on the BlackBerry Storm.

Earlier today at CTIA Wireless 2009 (see all stories), Slacker Radio demoed its new apps for Windows Mobile, Android, and Blackberry phones. In typical slacker Radio fashion, the applications looked sleek, suave, and dark–we’re not sure about dangerous. All three apps are gravitating toward a similar, standard look that tweaks the interface to add the same small improvements across the board: a new screen that tiles lyrics (visible in full with the Radio Plus subscription), biographies, and a review, and an area that reminds you which song is playing while you browse other categories.

You'll see this Slacker widget on Android someday soon.
